Our word is so faint and feeble, broken by the slightest breeze or breath…

“Broken families and marriages are an epidemic in the modern world, and the results are devastating.  This song works as a companion piece to “The Weight”, but instead of a first-person pledge of self-sacrificial love, it laments the consequences that follow our failures to fulfill those promises.  While we as a culture are obsessed with the idea of love, we are terrible lovers when we make it an idol, thinking that the ones we love will save us.  When they inevitably fail to meet that expectation, we assume the “right one” (our “soul-mate”) is still out there somewhere.  But real love is not self-seeking; it is self-giving, laying down its life for the other.”

-Dustin Kensrue, on his song “Promises”

“I think it’s great, it’s a great tradition where every 20 or so years… the poor people of my country scrape together $36 million to pay for two already massively rich children’s wedding.  What we get for that is to watch this strange medieval procession.  Some people say that we should break the tradition, but if we break with all of our traditions like burning witches and bad food, where would England be?  It would probably find itself in the middle of the 21st century, and that would be awful.”

-Paul Bettany, of Shephard’s Bush, London, England, on the Royal Wedding

[Don’t] Taze Me, Bro

After a long hiatus, I have finally had something that has gotten enough controversy for me to take sides and step up and say something.

Last night, in Philadelphia, a 17-year-old fan thought it would be a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to rush the field and run around like an idiot.  After around 30 seconds of chasing, the police officer tazed the kid, shooting him with a Taser gun.  After a couple of minutes, the kid was back on his feet and left the field under his own power, and consequently spent the night in jail.

The question that’s on every sports station across the country today is, “Was the use of force excessive?”   The kid’s father has gone on record as saying that he felt it was excessive, stating that his son had asked him for permission prior to entering the field (which the father declined to give).  Numbers have been thrown around about the possible adverse effects of the use of Taser guns, including the possibility of death.  While I do not take those numbers lightly, those people are failing to address the possibility of danger.

With the incident in the South Side of Chicago apparently too far in the past for people to remember, let me re-tell it quickly.  Several years ago, a father and son rushed the field during a Chicago White Sox game.  The duo attacked the first base coach with a feverish flurry of punches, and it was later discovered that one of the two assailants had a pocket knife on him.  How about Steffi Graf?  Monica Seles?  What is it going to take for people to quit the stupidity and just WATCH the game?   You’re a member of the audience, not a participant.  If you saw someone rush the stage during a presidential debate, would this all be just fun and games?

The reason why the police are in these stadiums and arenas are to keep the people and players safe.  In the moment, they have to make a judgment call.  While some people may view it as excessive, I see it as completely necessary.  Every year, we have these morons going for a joy ride on the field “for everyone’s entertainment”, delaying the game and, on occasion, putting people in danger.  If this incident will dissuade people from performing a similarly stupid act, then the incident is for the better.

In cases like these, I’d rather see the person that ran on the field being taken down by a Taser than seeing someone else taken away on a stretcher because we forced the security to have to overthink the possibility of “excessive force.”  If you don’t want to have the possibility of being zapped, then keep your ass in your seat and off the field.

Congrats to Penn State, hopefully your school can zap the stupid out of this kid, if the Taser and criminal charges haven’t already done that.

Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

With the holidays coming up quickly, and only a little over two weeks left for Christmas shopping, I remind people that “I don’t want a lot for Christmas… Make my wish come true…” [etc., etc., so on and so forth.]

Happy early Christmas everybody.

If there’s one thing I know in this life, we are beggars all…

I decided that tumblr will be my new thoughts storage place, partially because of seeing posts from here nonstop as well as drawing inspiration from HIMYM and Doug.

As we approach the end of another year, I find myself reflecting on how things have changed.  It’s been a whirlwind type of year, with lots of people flashing in and out of my life.  It can be kind of disorienting, but at the same time, I’ve really learned to embrace it.  I truly believe that things have their own way of working out, and that this isn’t just some weird type of outlier year, but probably how things will be for the foreseeable future.

Most of the changes this year has been for myself have been in mentality.  If I were writing a screenplay about my life, this would be the year that I would pick where I slowly start making my way towards adulthood.

Fate is a word that always escaped me, since I never believed that there’s something truly out of our control.  There’s coincidences and lucky breaks, but if someone talks about fate or destiny nowadays, I just have to kinda nod in agreement and walk away.  We control ourselves, who we are, who we associate with.  One small decision can definitely completely change our lives, but it’s not without having the majority of the control in our own hands.  Along those lines, with the holiday season approaching, and Thanksgiving recently passed, I would like my first post to be about my friends.

New, old… whether we’ve just met or we’ve known each other for years, whether I see you all the time, or just share warm greetings in our chance encounters, I’m very thankful for my friends.  I often feel like they might think I take them for granted, but I don’t.  I’m all about the phrase my buddies from This Condition always plug in: “Love Only.”

So while my life is changing and I can actually feel myself starting to mature mentally, the things that make me myself still haven’t changed.  I’ll still act like an immature idiot more than half the time, with my sarcastic wit that usually gets me in trouble on a daily basis.  I’ll still blindly love my friends, and hope that every day brings new people and new found closeness with other people I’ve met.  The old expression I’ve always heard is that beggars can’t be choosers.

Well, who says we can’t be?  I choose my friends, and THIS life that I’m leading.  And I couldn’t be happier.

LOVE ONLY.
